Mission

The Detroit Heirloom Conservatory is a service-oriented garden centered around heirloom vegetable cultivation, preservation and seed dissemination. It endeavors to be a dynamic multi-use community oriented space for both seasoned urban farmers and novice growers, while also providing a community programming space for the North Corktown Community. The goal of the Conservatory is to empower people through food production, while also promoting connoisseurship, which we see a natural outgrowth of the self-sufficiency that growing food inherently provides. An empowered self-sufficient urban farmer or gardener should have the freedom to cultivate whatever vegetables they choose. However, their choices are often dictated by commercial seed companies rather than personal preference. We seek to facilitate an agricultural and biodiversity that reflects the ethnic and cultural diversity of the city of Detroit. We endeavor to resist of mono-culture farming in an historically mono-industry city.
